Broc: May 2008 Archives
The last race in Dow City's Corral Raceway for 2008 finally gave us a dry track. Both boys had talked about going faster and Cole decided he was going to double both sets of jumps if he was going to beat Zane, the rider that beat him the last race. During practice, he tried the first double and came up short. He was thrown to the ground hard but got back up finished the practice. He told me that he wasn't going to try it again, and he didn't the rest of the day. He did race Zane harder in both motos, but again finished a strong second for the day.
Broc had talked about going faster in the corners to gain some speed and be more competitive in the open class. He looked faster in practice and in his first 85Jr race so he was convinced he could run with the older, faster boys. Broc was faster in the Open class, but still got pushed wide and finished 6th in moto 1. The second motos saw more of the same with him winning the Jr. class then getting a second place start in the Open class. His good start kept him near the front for a few laps, but as the race went on he again got to experience the old saying, "rubbin is racin" and was pushed back to finish 4th for a 6th overall. At seventy pounds, Broc isn't going to be able to push back so instead he'll have to ride smarter and anticipate the physical passes either block them or cut to the inside before they put a wheel inside of him.
As you can see by the pictures, Broc's starts have gotten worse with the Holeshot Helper. Look at the red number 9 bike ridden by his friend Steven, he is a good tire ahead of Broc right off the gate. He still gets the holeshot in the Jr. class, but he clearly is slower than without the device.
We are planning on sending the boys to Alex Manga's MX School in early June and this should help both boys learn new techniques to get them where they want to be.
Another cold and wet Sunday greeted us at Corral Raceway on April 20th. Broc thought he could use a holeshot device to help him with his starts. We decided to have Broc race in the 85 Open class to test his skills against kids 2-3 years older. After working for an hour or so trying to attach the "Tamer Holeshot Helper", we finally had it ready for Broc's first 85 Jr. moto. He holeshot and won this moto, but only had one race between the 85 Jr. and 85 Open class. Broc basically got beat! "These guys are fast", he said after the race. He went out and won his second 85Jr. moto again, but wanted to do better in the Open class. After a long discussion about where he thought he could pick up some speed, he decided if he got a better start, he might be able to hang with the pack. So, the second moto of the 85 Open class Broc surprised everyone and holeshot then led for a few turns. Broc is learning a lot in this class, one thing is that they get physical and will push you wide to get by, something Broc hasn't dealt with before. All in all, it is teaching him that being fast doesn't mean you always win.
Cole had some competition with someone that used to race with him but had not raced our series last year and had definitely gotten faster. Cole started well and raced hard for second place in both motos. A little disapointed, but still was racing his hardest.
Not a bad weekend for Mason Brothers Racing, a first and 8th for Broc and a second for Cole. We'll get em next time!
On a cold overcast Sunday, the SW Iowa MX Championship kicked off for 2008. Everyone was surprised to think that we would get to race in early April, but the rain stopped on Friday and Saturday allowed Rich and Digger to work on the track.
The track started out muddy but was perfect about half way through the first motos. The motos went well for both Broc and Cole with each one getting both moto holeshots and winning their motos.
