Recently in Broc CategoryUncle S. was in town to see the boys race, so the pressure was on. The boys raced well in the humid heat. Broc's 85 Open class was a fast group as usual. Racing against the older faster kids will prove to be a good learning experience as Broc moves up through the groups in the future. Cole scored 2-2 in his 65 Junior class to take second overall. He showed an incredible determination in repeatedly catching and trying to pass Zane, who raced well as always - nice job, Zane. Broc's 85 Junior class was a nailbiting race and came down to the wire. In the first heat, Broc didn't get the best gate choice and ended up with a slower start. He took third in the heat. In the second, he benefitted from a fall and quickly jumped from third to first, a lead he held and grew all the way to the finish. With the second heat counting for more than the first, Broc's 3-1 was good enough for the overall win. Trevor continues to show improvement, getting better starts and restarting like a rocket after a fall in the 65 Senior class race. It was also good to see Luke V. who came to the races with his leg in a cast. Luke had a terrible accident recently and is on the road to recovery... get well soon Luke!
July 20th at Persia wa a good weekend for MBR. Trevor finished the 85jr class a passed several riders in the 65sr class. He continues to improve but we may limit the day before practicing sessions to 2 hours maximum so they aren’t worn out for Sundays racing. Cole was as proud of himself as we were for him. He finally beat his rival and friend Zane. He wanted to tease Zane after the race but realized it wasn’t appropriate at the time. He continues to be the points leader. Broc took second in the 85jr class to a District 22 racer, Chase Evans and fourth in the open class. Luke V continues to gain speed as he holeshot moto 2 of the jr class and holding Broc off for the first lap. Broc continues to lead the 85jr and is 3rd in the open.

Mason Brothers Racing results for July 5, 2008 at Pine Hill MX
This was the first race since the boys attended the Alex Manga MX School. Expectations were high from all three boys, we just wanted them to use what they learned and do there best.
In practice, Trevor went down hard over the handlebars in the rhythm section, biting his lip and hitting his head and knee. He was hurting and didn’t think he could race. After sitting through the rest of the practices, he decided to gear up for the first 85jr moto. This was his first race on the 85 and he did great. He finished the race with no crashes and proved he was tough enough to come back after a big crash. During the second moto he bettered his finish and ended up 5th for a 5th overall.
His 65 sr race was even better for him as he finished 3rd in both motos for a third place on the night.
Cole’s motos went well for him as well, he fought for second overall for the night. He looked faster than Broc in the main straightaway and was able to fight off a late charge from third place.
Broc had an interesting night with both moto wins in the 85jr class. He was challenged both times by our friend Luke V. His 85 open race marked the first time Broc won the class. He beat the points leader Tom Cox and did a no footer off the finishline jump.
All three of the boys proved that they had learned from the Alex Manga MX School and that we hadn’t wasted our time and money. Thanks to everyone who helped us get there! ![]() ![]()
The last race in Dow City's Corral Raceway for 2008 finally gave us a dry track. Both boys had talked about going faster and Cole decided he was going to double both sets of jumps if he was going to beat Zane, the rider that beat him the last race. During practice, he tried the first double and came up short. He was thrown to the ground hard but got back up finished the practice. He told me that he wasn't going to try it again, and he didn't the rest of the day. He did race Zane harder in both motos, but again finished a strong second for the day.
Broc had talked about going faster in the corners to gain some speed and be more competitive in the open class. He looked faster in practice and in his first 85Jr race so he was convinced he could run with the older, faster boys. Broc was faster in the Open class, but still got pushed wide and finished 6th in moto 1. The second motos saw more of the same with him winning the Jr. class then getting a second place start in the Open class. His good start kept him near the front for a few laps, but as the race went on he again got to experience the old saying, "rubbin is racin" and was pushed back to finish 4th for a 6th overall. At seventy pounds, Broc isn't going to be able to push back so instead he'll have to ride smarter and anticipate the physical passes either block them or cut to the inside before they put a wheel inside of him. As you can see by the pictures, Broc's starts have gotten worse with the Holeshot Helper. Look at the red number 9 bike ridden by his friend Steven, he is a good tire ahead of Broc right off the gate. He still gets the holeshot in the Jr. class, but he clearly is slower than without the device. We are planning on sending the boys to Alex Manga's MX School in early June and this should help both boys learn new techniques to get them where they want to be. ![]()
Another cold and wet Sunday greeted us at Corral Raceway on April 20th. Broc thought he could use a holeshot device to help him with his starts. We decided to have Broc race in the 85 Open class to test his skills against kids 2-3 years older. After working for an hour or so trying to attach the "Tamer Holeshot Helper", we finally had it ready for Broc's first 85 Jr. moto. He holeshot and won this moto, but only had one race between the 85 Jr. and 85 Open class. Broc basically got beat! "These guys are fast", he said after the race. He went out and won his second 85Jr. moto again, but wanted to do better in the Open class. After a long discussion about where he thought he could pick up some speed, he decided if he got a better start, he might be able to hang with the pack. So, the second moto of the 85 Open class Broc surprised everyone and holeshot then led for a few turns. Broc is learning a lot in this class, one thing is that they get physical and will push you wide to get by, something Broc hasn't dealt with before. All in all, it is teaching him that being fast doesn't mean you always win.
Cole had some competition with someone that used to race with him but had not raced our series last year and had definitely gotten faster. Cole started well and raced hard for second place in both motos. A little disapointed, but still was racing his hardest. Not a bad weekend for Mason Brothers Racing, a first and 8th for Broc and a second for Cole. We'll get em next time! ![]() ![]()
On a cold overcast Sunday, the SW Iowa MX Championship kicked off for 2008. Everyone was surprised to think that we would get to race in early April, but the rain stopped on Friday and Saturday allowed Rich and Digger to work on the track.
The track started out muddy but was perfect about half way through the first motos. The motos went well for both Broc and Cole with each one getting both moto holeshots and winning their motos.
In sub-zero temperatures, we raced our first indoor supercross of 2008, the Midwest Supercross run by Peterson Racing Promotions. The race is so well run that it should be on the list of any Midwest rider, nice job guys!
After an afternoon of practice, we started the evening with Cole taking 3rd in his heat race. Broc then took 4th after rolling all of the doubles and holding back from his normal abilities. In the 65cc 7-9 main, Cole started in 4th then passed for third. With 2 laps left, Cole had caught up with second and was trying to pass everywhere. He tried to pass in the whoops with 2 corners left and went down hard. The crowd was into this battle and a big sigh went out when Cole went down. He ended up gettng back up and finishing 8th.
Brocs' race had him getting a 4th place start and finishing in 5th place. He told me that he would double the section on Saturdays' practice and hopefully be in the hunt for a win! ![]() Broc and Cole started the season in style this weekend in Brookings, South Dakota at the Midwest Supercross. Broc's Yamaha YZ85 and Cole's Kawasaki KX65 were outfitted with awesome MBR graphics provided by the folks at RoostMX. Thanks to Christina, Chris and Matt from RoostMX... the bikes look awesome!
![]() Cole took the 50cc jr Championship and Broc won the 65cc jr Championship in 2007. The 2nd annual Hillblazer's Hillclimb was held in March 2007, and Cole was the only 50cc bike to clear the hill. If you listen closely, you can hear the crowd cheering him on. He was competting in the 50-84cc class, which meant he was running against 65cc bikes and 3 of them had extended swingarms. He ended up 4th in his class! Broc won the 85-124cc class and even climbed the bigger "Technical Hill" after the event was over, making the club question the toughness of thier hill if an 85cc bike can climb it. |
